Taking SA to the world with 2010

A recent workshop, initiated by the mfsa Cape Town and facilitated by international consultant Clem Sunter, was held to identify how Cape Town and South Africa can take these two brands to the world with the launch of the Soccer World Cup in 2010.

Sunter is facilitating World Cup 2010 sessions in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town using his scenario planning outlined in his latest book 'The Games Foxes Play'.

A number of private sector companies committed to the process attended the workshop, but it was noted that there is a need to make it more representative and ensure the buy in of each and every citizen in Cape Town; with the public sector needing to be strongly represented and part of the team driving this process.

Gavin Cowley, Marketing Director of Adidas South Africa comments: "As a global player and sponsor of the 2010 World Cup, Adidas believes that there will be enormous opportunity for Cape Town and the country as a whole. Sport is a wonderful vehicle for unifying people and this World Cup will result in significant sustainable job creation and community development."

Sunter, in the final words of the workshop advises: "If Cape Town wants to get maximum value out of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, it must begin with a serious build-up of developmental activities from now - which will be around long after the Cup is over."

Diana Carson, from the mfsa Cape Town advisory board, says that a further, more representative workshop will be facilitated in the second half of July. Prior to this session, the MFSA will ensure that there is no duplication in terms of committees that have already been established with the same objectives in mind.

The objective of this workshop will be for the public and private sectors to develop a 100 day plan to collectively work towards how we can achieve local buy in, in terms of how we take Cape Town and South Africa to the world.
