Brand that channel

Marketers have a limited window of opportunity to claim ten available satellite broadcast channels that beam across Sub-Sahara Africa and parts of Europe. Like international brands Audi and Thomas Cook who have created their own branded content TV channels in the UK, local businesses will be able to do the same.

Stanley Edwards, a partner at Platypus Productions, says that in a partnership with a UK-based satellite service provider, clients have the opportunity to broadcast marketing related content to a massive footprint of upwardly mobile-Africans around the continent with satellite decoders.

"For less than R3 million a year a brand can own its own 24-hour TV channel, which is extremely cost efficient when you think what it costs for a traditional television advertising campaign or the cost to create and produce printed material for in-store use alone."

Edwards says the revolution that began with narrowcasting which allowed marketers to send still and TV messages to selected retail sites has now expanded to the possibility of broadcasting dynamic media to a much wider audience and into the home on a free-to-air system.

"From our broadcast studios in Cape Town and Johannesburg we are now able to produce and upload packaged and live content to the broadcast networks and, through strategic partnerships, are able to offer the same service in Port Elizabeth, Durban and Pietermaritzberg."

According to Edwards, the new channel offers great opportunities for branded television channels, business broadcasts, training, game shows, the broadcasting of events and for the creation of retail television stations, corporate television and marketing channels.
