Bookings open for Design Indaba Young Designers Simulcast

Design Indaba's Young Designers Simulcast (YDS) is an opportunity for under-25s to experience the main Design Indaba Conference, taking place 29 February-2 March 2012, through live broadcasts to a second auditorium in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Bookings are now open.

Confirmed speakers include scent expert Sissel Tolaas, sustainable furniture designer Piet Hein Eek, multimedia masters United Visual Artists (UVA), innovator Clive van Heerden, MIT researchers in future city living Assaf Biderman and Carlo Ratti, and the designer that "thinks wrong to make right", John Bielenberg.

Johannesburg discounts

The simulcast will use an auditorium at the CTICC and one at the Art Centre Theatre on the Kingsway Campus at the University of Johannesburg's Faculty of Arts and Design.

At the discounted rate of R950, including VAT, Johannesburg delegates can listen to a live simulcast from the main event in Cape Town. However, because sharing is caring, R1600 gets two under-25 tickets to YDS in Jozi. Creativity and inspiration are, after all, things best enjoyed with each other.

YDS delegates in Cape Town can attend a live broadcast of the main Design Indaba Conference at a second auditorium at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for R1370.

UVA join conference

Multimedia masters Ash Nehru, Chris Bird and Matt Clark of United Visual Artists (UVA) will speak at the conference. Established in 2003, this is an art and design practice based in London that produces work at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image and digital installation.

The work has been exhibited at institutions including the V&A, the Royal Academy of Art, the South Bank Centre, the Wellcome Collection, Opera North Leeds, Durham Cathedral and the British Library. Its artworks have also toured internationally including Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Yamaguchi, Taipei, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Barcelona. It also has large-scale permanent artworks in Toronto and Istanbul.

Its designs for live performance have led to commissions at venues such as the Tate Modern turbine hall, Madison Square Garden in New York and Trafalgar Square London. UVA has also collaborated with musicians including Massive Attack, Jay Z, U2, The Chemical Brothers and Battles.

In 2007, its responsive light and sound sculpture 'Volume' won a Yellow Pencil at the D&AD awards, and featured in the London Design Museum's "Design of the Year" show in 2008. 'Speed of Light' was also featured in the London Design of the Year exhibition, showing the best designs of 2010. It was awarded a distinction for its kinetic installation 'Chorus' at the 2010 edition of Prix Arts Electronica. In 2011, 'Speed of Light' was awarded a Creative Review Annual and listed in the Annual as "Best in Book".
