Cell C tops number portability table

Independent statistics released last week show that Cell C is the biggest winner over the first twelve days, following the introduction of mobile number portability (MNP) on 10 November 2006. The Cell C network (including Virgin Mobile) had by late last week gained over half (56.47%) of the total number of subscribers who had elected to port and change their networks.

The latest figures issued by the Central Record Data Base (CRDB) also showed that Cell C had hardly lost any customers to its rival networks. Of the total number of customers who have ported, only 13.55% were Cell C customers.

"These independent figures are a massive shot in the arm for Cell C and confirms the strategic logic behind the partnership with Virgin Mobile SA," says chief executive Jeffrey Hedberg.

"We are very encouraged by these numbers, as they prove what we have been saying for the past five years, that Cell C is here to challenge the established norms in the market. And now that cell phone users are free to port, customers are voting with their feet and moving to Cell C."

The actual figures are not available to the public.
