Sony's PS3 Plan: Shrewd strategy or drapes on the Titanic?

With sales of Sony's struggling PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console picking up in Europe, Japan and the United States, the company's CEO, Howard Stringer, revealed details of its plans going forward for the console at a press conference held in Tokyo on Tuesday, 11 December 2007.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer attempted to answer many of the questions surrounding his company's PS3 video game platform Tuesday. The PS3 is enjoying a recent uptick in sales, but overall has lagged far behind industry leaders. Stringer outlined plans for increasing the console's media connectivity options, but is this the correct path for the once-dominant video game giant?

The PS3 outsold Nintendo's Wii in Japan for the first time during the first week of November, following the introduction of price cuts and new models, according to Enterbrain, a Tokyo-based research firm. Sony sold 183,217 PS3 consoles, while Nintendo rang up sales of 159,193.
