The Stone Awards 2002 - 'Excellence Cast in Stone'

The National Television and Video Association of SA (NTVA) is calling for entries to their Stone Awards which recognises excellence in television, video and related media programmes produced in the Western Cape.

This award celebrates work produced in Athe shadow of Table Mountain.

For the first time, this year all video entries will automatically be included in Sithengi 2002's Product Library at no additional cost (unless requested not to do so).

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1. Only work produced in the Western Cape in the past 12 months qualifies for entry into this competition. (5 Oct 2001 - 18 Oct 2002)
2. No programme may be entered by more than one individual or organisation.
3. Award Certificates and Trophies will be inscribed with the name of the person or organisation on whose behalf the winning entry was submitted.
4. All details on entry forms must be carefully checked by the entrant prior to submission as these will be used as the source documents for the Awards and Press releases and cannot be amended or verified by the Awards Committee.
5. Any number of entries may be submitted in any of the Award Categories but no programme may be entered into more than one category.
6. If the Judges consider an entry has been entered into an unsuitable category, they may re-categorise the entry.
7. Should an entry exceed 30 minutes in length, it is left to the Judges= discretion to view the programme in its entirety or not.
8. Only programmes completed between 5 October 2001 and 18 October 2002 are eligible.
9. All entries into IT categories (17 - 21) must be fully completed and signed off by commissioning client to be eligible.
10. Entries must comply with the following:
a. The concept must be original.
b. The entrant must have obtained clearance for the NTVA to retain the programme, copy the programme in its entirety or excerpts thereof for library purposes and screening at the Awards presentation.
11. The entrant assumes full responsibility for the technical quality of the entry.
12. A clearly completed entry form securely attached to the container, which must also be clearly labelled, must accompany each entry. (Entry forms are available on the NTVA's website at www.ntva.org.za.)
13. The NTVA cannot be held liable for loss or damage of entries submitted, though every effort will be made to ensure safety of the entry.
14. Entries must be submitted on Betacam SP, DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO or CD. Entrants in the category Websites only need to supply the URL.
15. All entries in categories 1 to 16 will automatically be forwarded to Sithengi 2002 for inclusion in their product library and guide (see special note on this).
16. All prize-winning entries will be retained for archival purposes. It is the responsibility of non-winning entrants, wishing to have their entries returned, to arrange for the collection of their entries from the NTVA Office within a period of two months after the Awards presentation.
17. No entry will be accepted without full payment.

ENTRANT LIABILITY

The NTVA accepts no liability for any licensing or copyright of material within an entry. By entering the Competition, the entrant accepts full responsibility for all material submitted and holds the NTVA blameless and will indemnify the NTVA in any and all lawsuits, fees or other settlements, which might arise out of copyright violation action at law.

ACCEPTANCE OF CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Entrants agree to accept and abide by all Conditions of Entry for the NTVA Stone Awards 2002 as well as decisions of the Organising Committee and Judges.

SITHENGI PARTICIPATION

All video entries will be included in the 2002 Sithengi Product Library, if not indicated otherwise, at no extra cost. Should entrants want to schedule a screening of their production at Sithengi they must contact Taryn da Canha on 021 430 8427 e-mail or visit www.sithengi.co.za for further details. If entrants do not want their entries submitted to Sithengi, they must indicate this on the entry form.
Only entries submitted by 27 September 2002 will be included in the Sithengi Product Library guide, entries submitted after this date will be published in a separate pamphlet that will be in the product library during the market.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The Organising Committee of the Stone Awards 2002, which is appointed by the Western Cape Chapter of the NTVA, has complete authority over all aspects of the judging process and the Award Presentations. Any decision made by the committee shall be final and binding.

JUDGING

Basic criteria:
1. Creativity and innovation.
2. Communication effectiveness.
3. Concept realisation.
4. Production execution.
Judging occurs in two stages. Only entries scoring above 55% in the first stage are nominated for awards.

The Organising Committee selects judges. They will be recognised practitioners within the video, television and related industries. All decisions regarding awards made by the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

AWARDS:

A STONE AWARD is given at the discretion of the judges if an entrant achieves an exceptional score in the final judging process.

CRAFT AWARDS recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to the overall success of a production. Craft awards may be given even if the entry does not qualify for any other award. Craft Awards honour technical and creative achievements in areas such as: art direction, cinematography/videography, editing/post-production, programming, script, soundtrack, original score, choreography, set design, voice over performance, etc. Judges may award multiple Crafts Awards to an entry.

GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE AWARDS are made if an entry achieves a pre-determined score. There are no limitations to the number of Gold, Silver or Bronze awards in any category.

AWARDS FUNCTION

Awards will be presented at our STONE Awards 2002 Function scheduled for 7 December 2002. Attendance is by bookings only and tickets will be available from the Western Cape Chapter of the NTVA. Confirmation details of the function date and venue will be published through the NTVA INFOmail and on our website: www.ntva.org.za.

DOCUMENTATION AND CLOSING DATE

A separate entry form and videotape must be prepared for each entry. Additional forms are available on request from the NTVA Office and the NTVA website at http://www.ntva.org.za. This form may also be photocopied. Final closing date for entries will be 18 October 2002.

Note on Video entries - SITHENGI 2002

All video entries (categories 1 - 16) will be included in the Sithengi 2002 product library at no extra cost. Please note: Only entries received before 27 September 2002 will be included in the official catalogue due to Sithengi deadlines. All other entries will be published in a separate pamphlet that will be in the product library during the market.

No late entries will be accepted. No entry will be accepted without payment.

NEWCOMER COMPETITION

This competition is judged independently. Productions may be entered by first time entrants, as well as registered students of recognised education/training facilities in video, film and the related industry.

Entries will be judged in four broad categories:

  • marketing/promotional/informative
  • art/entertainment
  • education/training/social awareness
  • multi-media

    CATEGORIES FOR PROFESSIONAL COMPETITION

    1 CORPORATE COMMUNICATION

    A production designed to enhance and promote the image of a company, which does not focus on a specific product or service, or a production used as internal company communication.

    2 SALES AND MARKETING (INCLUDING SHOWREELS)

    A production designed to introduce or promote specific products or services, including Showreels and Tourism programmes.

    3 COMMERCIALS

    A commercial production not exceeding 90 seconds. (Production houses to submit with prior approval from the advertising agency, if applicable).

    4 EDUCATION/TRAINING/INSTRUCTIONAL

    A production designed to improve the knowledge of, or present information to the viewer without sales or fund raising intent.

    5 ART/ENTERTAINMENT

    A production created with or without commercial intent including experimental and self-expressive works.

    6 SITCOMS

    A situation comedy produced for broadcast (commissioned, not on spec).

    7 NEWS/ACTUALITY INSERTS

    An insert created specifically for broadcast on a news or actuality programme.

    8 MAGAZINE INSERTS

    A production intended to contribute to a programme and which may be on any topic.

    9 MUSIC VIDEO

    A production created entirely for the presentation of musical entertainment.

    10 DOCUMENTARY (EXCLUDING WILDLIFE/CONSERVATION)

    A production intended to communicate certain viewpoints through an account of an event, concept, institution or person.

    11 WILD LIFE/CONSERVATION

    A production focusing on wild life or conservation issues.

    12 SOCIAL AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY INTEREST

    A programme focusing specifically on situations, personalities and organisations, which require donations and sponsorship to exist.

    13 MAGAZINE AND TALK SHOWS

    Any magazine format entertainment show or talk show. This may be variety, entertainment, journalistic or educational.

    14 YOUTH AND CHILDRENS PROGRAMMING

    A production designed specifically for children or a young audience.

    15 DRAMA SERIES

    A drama series produced for broadcast.

    16 BEST FILM (INCLUDING SHORTS)

    A one-off film, drama programmes or short film, which is not part of a series.

    17 ANIMATION

    a. WEB BASED ANIMATION

    An entry that relies primarily on the use of animation or graphics to convey its objectives. Encompassing Flash and Director based media.

    b. PRE-RENDERED ANIMATION/COMPUTER GRAPHICS

    An entry that relies primarily on the use of animation or graphics to convey its objectives. Incorporating movie based media.

    18 NEW MEDIA

    Awards will be given for:

    a. CD ROM

    A production for and using CD-ROM.

    b. DVD

    A production for and using DVD.

    c. KIOSKS

    A kiosk for general or specific use.

    d. COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING

    A training course where the training objective is assisted in all respects by computer systems and where the training is multimedia in the use of formats.

    e. INTERACTIVE TELEVISION

    A production or series of productions where the essence is dependent on interactivity of the user/viewer and where technology allows the user to interact in real-time and immediately or concurrently.

    f. SHOWREELS

    An interactive entry designed to specifically showcase the work of an individual or company.

    19 INTERACTIVE GAMES

    a. CONCEPT OR BRAND PROMOTION

    An interactive game that promotes the nature of a concept or the objectives of a brand.

    b. ENTERTAINMENT

    A computer programme whose main focus is entertainment in the form of an interactive game.

    20 WEBSITES

    A website designed for the Internet or intranet.
    In this category, awards will be made for:

    a. CORPORATE WEBSITES

    A website designed to promote the business objectives of a commercial enterprise.

    b. CONCEPT OR BRAND PROMOTION

    A website that promotes the nature of a concept or the objectives of a brand.

    c. PERSONAL PROMOTION

    A website that portrays and/or promotes a person or individual.

    d. NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS

    A website that serves the objectives of and/or promotes a charitable cause or a non-profit organisation.

    e. ENTERTAINMENT, PORTAL AND REFERENCE

    A website that is a gateway to other sites, serving a common purpose, or a site that offers pure entertainment, or information packaged for reference.

    f. INTERACTIVITY

    Technology and techniques on the site that offer innovative and satisfying means of interactivity for the benefit of the user.

    g VIRAL/RICH MEDIA MAILERS

    An entry, interactive or otherwise, designed as an e-mail or an e-mail attachment for the purposes of brand promotion or entertainment.

    21 SPEAKER SUPPORT PRESENTATION

    A computer based presentation developed for speaker support in a presentation.
