Film festival to strengthen worker solidarity

Last year the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Western Cape, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the South African Clothing & Textile Workers Union (SACTWU), the National Education, Health & Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and the Food & Allied Workers Union (FAWU) collaborated with WWMP to host the 1st Labour Film Festival which took place at Industria House in Salt River, Cape Town.

This year the committee – including labour federations COSATU Western Cape and NACTU and some of their union affiliates in the Western Cape – will be hosting a bigger event which will take place over three evenings at the Community House in Salt River, Cape Town.

The programme will also include arts and culture performances and the festival will end off with a celebration for all comrades and participants. The Medical Aid Scheme for workers in SA (SAMWU Med), which supported the event with a generous sponsorship last year, is once again the sponsor.

WWMP’s mission as an organisation is “to provide quality, relevant and informative media productions and access to the media for the labour movement and working class people”.

While using film as an awareness and educational tool is not a new concept, using films about labour issues is still new for the labour movement of this country.
