Graphic opportunity for the industry

C3 has brought Alias's new Maya 3D and 2D graphics and animation package to South Africa, offering the local movie production, advertising, design and multimedia design industries the means to make a giant leap in performance.

The new version, 6.5, can handle data sets between 10 and 100 times larger than previous versions, a boost of up to 10 000%.

Garren James, MD of local distributor C3, says the new package optimises performance for designers working on games, film special effects, broadcast and digital publishing: "Contrary to popular belief, Maya is not only used for making films and video games, even though it was used in Oscar-winning movies such as the Lord of the Rings, Spiderman 2 and Ryan, an acclaimed animated short film.

"The software is used to add 3D realism to 2D print projects and presentations such as adverts and logos; make websites stand out with visuals and animation; create artwork for books, magazines, posters, newsletters and other media; design models for engineering, architecture and industrial design; and add 3D treatments, animation and effects to existing work from other graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator."

Maya 6.5 also has a new STEP converter for importing large CAD datasets from most CAD packages: "Many graphic designers are starting to use CAD data sets, such as those working with consumer products. With the new version it is easier to bring in CAD data to perform photo realistic renderings."
