Marketers vs. Creatives

There is a big debate between marketers and creatives, and the basic concept: Is imagination more important than knowledge.

On the 16th March on Media Focus (SABC 3) there was a brief discussion of the importance of creativity, specifically with regard to the Loerie awards, which is primarily about advertising.

When I talk about creativity I also include in design, marketing and also including the element of innovation.

Many companies that have little no creative element within them continue to believe that it is not an important part of their business. This therefore leads to the concept that they believe in basic product-price concepts.

Traditionally businesses are controlled by people with a financial background, and also not giving an equal say to the 'creatives' in the organisation. This is thie first problem, not saying that their education was bad, just that there should be some more diverse and creative elements in their training.

Is there enough creativity being put into standard organisations, look at a company like IDEO in the U.S. shouldn't every company try to incorporate some of those elements. A good example of how creativity can make or break an organisation is Apple, innovation, design and creativity have all contributed into making it a success from what it was.

Simply put, are organisations, specifically in South Africa, putting enough effort into really transforming the way they do business and instead of basic product-price wars looking into developing a serious relationship with their environment, especially by incorporating creativity.
