Halloween: the revenge of the evil marketer

Why has Halloween suddenly become such a prominent feature of the South African calendar?

Halloween has never been a part of SA culture. It has zero relevance to life in the southern hemisphere (never mind that half the platteland believes it encourages devil-worship). So now hapless parents being inveigled into buying various pumpkin and witch-themed tat, and innocent citizens are being tormented by the local brats screeching "trick or treat" down the intercom.

The only explanation for this development is that slimy marketing types have cottoned onto yet another way to get people to part with their money, yet another stupid "theme" with which to order the marketing calendar. Even the cashiers in my local supermarket were wearing witch's hats last week. My fellow South Africans, we must put an end to this madness!
