    South African retail sales up 3.1% in December

    Stats SA reports that South Africa's retail trade sales increased by 3.1% year-on-year in December 2021.

    The main positive contributor to this increase was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (15.2% and contributing 3.1 percentage points).

    In 2021, retail trade sales increased by 6.4% compared with 2020. All seven types of retailer showed positive year-on-year growth rates over this period. The main contributor was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (19.2% and contributing 3.0 percentage points).

    Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 1.5% in December 2021 compared with November 2021. This followed month-on-month changes of 1.6% in November 2021 and -1.3% in October 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2021, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 5.3% compared with the third quarter of 2021.

    Retail trade sales increased by 2.6% in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared with the fourth quarter of 2020. The main positive contributor to this increase was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (11.3% and contributing 2.1 percentage points).
