Children get writing

SABC Education is looking for stories from children aged between 10 and 15 for the Ciak Junior 2006 international television competition that exposes children to hands-on productions, making television interesting and appropriate for children from an educational aspect.

The competition gives children the chance to write their stories in any language about events that changed their lives or about family, friends or community.

Jacqui Hlongwane-Papo, Project Manager at SABC Education explains: "Once a winning story is chosen, the winner will star in and help produce a short film. Our production team visits the winning school and workshops the winning story into a film script.

"The writers are the heroes of the story, actors are chosen by classmates, and children act the role of children, not adults. The children are involved all the way, learning about scripts, shoots, editing and making a film. When the film is finished it is sent to Ciak Junior in Italy to be judged with others from around the world. The winners are flown to Italy to attend the Ciak Junior award ceremony and meet other young film makers from around the world' concludes Jacqui."

The films 'Lucky' and 'Mbiya & his Cow' written by Marko Smit and Peace Mnisi respectively won South Africa the grand jury prize for best film for the past two years.

Closing date for entries is 30 November 2005, entry forms are available by visiting www.sabceducation.co.za or by dialling 086 2222 005 from a fax phone.
