    94.7 now offering podcasts

As from Monday, 28 August 2006, 94.7 Highveld Stereo listeners are now able to download the Rude Awakening's daily traffic joke to WAP-enabled cellphones. The audio file may be podcasted directly from the radio station's website or by smsing a special number.

"We're very excited to be entering the world of digital downloads with this, our first mobile offering," says Primedia Broadcasting general manager, Ryan Till. "The Rude Awakening's traffic joke is extremely popular with listeners, so we thought it would be the perfect on-air feature to start podcasting. The joke will be available for download from 9am each weekday."

Podcasting is basically the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video snippets, over the Internet for playback on mobile phones or personal computers. While the term comes from Apple's iPod music players, and their ability to play multimedia files, it's commonly accepted now to include all types of playback devices.

"This is the first of many new developments planned to ensure more interactivity with our listeners, and in conjunction with that, more value for our advertisers," adds Till. "We are in the process of programming more downloadable content and increased offerings for our listeners, which we plan to roll out over the next few months."

Sponsor of the new product offering is Samsung, while the technical partners involved are Exactmobile and Airgames, both owned by Primedia.
