POIB law by June? SABC's Man with No Matric moved

NEWSWATCH: Despite massive and unrelenting opposition from many quarters - including Right2Know, the ANC's own alliance partner Cosatu, and criticism by Ronnie Kasrils, former cabinet minister - it seems the contentious bill could become law by June, reports Mail & Guardian, which also reports that the SABC has moved Hlaudi Motsoeneng out of his position as acting chief operating officer.

For more:

  • Mail & Guardian: Secrecy Bill could be made law by June... Next stop... Constitutional Court? Most likely...

It seems that not even opposition from within its own ranks will deter the ANC/government from approving this bill. Even Ronnie Kasrils, a former minister of intelligence is critical of many of the provisions of the bill.

He wrote in a Sunday Times article that, "A healthy civic society and media are integral parts of the checks and balances required by a democratic system and can help clean up the cancer of corruption and the ills that go with it. They need to be encouraged and not treated with hostility and suspicion."

Well said, but you can bet those who are pushing for this bill to become law have a very different view.

  • Mail & Guardian: SABC replaces Motsoeneng as acting chief operating officer... Oh dear, there's Hlaudi weather over at Awkward Park... Our Man Without A Matric has been replaced as COO by the current head of radio news and current affairs Mike Siluma, and Motsoeneng will move back to his position as group editor of provinces.

Surely even that position demands an individual with at least a Matric?
