South African online traditional music concert launched

Launched by the South African Digital Content Organisation (SADICO) and backed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, it offered fans performers such as Phuzekhemisi, Siphokazi, Nothembi Mkhwebane, Selaelo Selota, Bheki Khoza and Mahotella Queens, with Hector Motau as the MC.

"This was a ground-breaking event, as it showcased the technology capabilities of South Africa, as the concert was streamed live to the rest of the world," says Linda Khumalo from SADICO.

"Eventually, we want to see all web developers, graphic designers and digital players in the digital content community benefiting from events such as this one, as well as creating a new sector that will offer growth opportunities. The department is proud to be associated with this event. Mainly as this gives practical expression to the UN resolution entitled 'ICT for development', a resolution South Africa has been signatory to for many years, added Lebogang Maile, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

"Pioneering online concert business"

"We are also honoured because our project is pioneering the online concert business model with our musicians who specialise in traditional music and represents the majority of our people with the voice and messages. These musicians are already online through the Phuzekhemisi fan club on www.phuzekhemisi.co.za," concludes Khumalo.

The SADICO project is driven by the company's vision to see every community in South Africa actively participating in the digital content space and contributing to this sector, which is driving the future.

SADICO is planning for similar events and working closely with digital content companies both at corporate level as well as at community levels.
