Local security expert at international sports events management event

Rory Steyn, director at Nicholls Steyn and Associates (NSA), a Johannesburg-based provider of specialised security services for local and global clients, joined the panel discussion at the fifth Annual International Sports Events Management (ISEM) Event, held at the Twickenham Rugby Stadium in London, 3-4 November 2010.

The panel topic, 'Developing and implementing effective security strategies at and around the event' focussed on engaging stakeholders' cooperation and assistance in order to coordinate an overall security plan; understanding risk assessment planning and procedures; establishing objectives early on and the importance of clearly communicating those objectives to all personnel; as well as effective crowd management and venue safety and security.

"NSA was pleased to be able to share some of its experience gained from not only the 2010 FIFA World Cup but also other sporting events such as the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC World Twenty20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL), where we act as the tournament security consultants. At the moment, in terms of event security, our focus is on providing specialised security services to our clients at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 on the Indian sub-continent, IPL 2011 and the London Summer Olympic Games in 2012," said Steyn.

ISEM is attended by international and national sports federations, bidding and host countries and cities, organising committees and representatives of local and national government who want to ensure the successful planning, delivery and execution of sports events. Other speakers included London 2012 CEO Paul Deighton; followed by a speech from Dmitry Chernyshenko, who is driving Russia's first Winter Olympic Games at Sochi in 2014; as well as a post-event debrief of the World Cup delivered by LOC CEO, Danny Jordaan.
