‘We didn't start the fire' - Good Hope FM

Good Hope FM afternoon drive show The Fastlane was silenced earlier this week for a few minutes at the request of the fire department. At approximately 3pm, the station's live transmission kicked into automatic pilot as Ryan O'Connor, Mark Marshall and Tracey Lange joined SABC staff in evacuating the building after a fire alert.

People were seen scurrying out of the building while others hovered to catch a glimpse of what was believed to be a massive fire. Fire engines lined up outside 209 Beach Road, Sea Point, Cape Town, as firemen tried to find the source of the smoke that crept through the five-storey building.

O'Connor and his team entertained public members outside and tried to make light of a possibly dangerous situation.

Commented marketing manager Meegan Kieffer, “We are grateful that our team and staff managed to get out of the building and that the fire turned out to be a small one. Good Hope FM is programmed and automated in situations such as these, allowing the hits to continue to play through the airwaves.”

Once the building was declared safe, the team made their way back to the studio to continue with the last two hours of the show. Being the station's funny man, O'Connor managed to bring ‘comic' relief to the situation, stating that he notified the fire department by quoting Billy Joel, “We didn't start the fire.”
