Chocolate scented magazine offers open source content

New Media (NMP), publishers of the popular youth magazine HIP2B2 has tailored its content to speak to the youth in a language they understand: infographics, user-generated content (UGC) and bite-sized chunks of smart, useful information.

Its current issue carries no usage restrictions under the Creative Commons License, reportedly a first for a South African youth publication. Based on this, content is exclusively open source, which means learners can share content, remix it to suit their needs or use it verbatim for projects or as an additional study resource.

"Open source is something that we've always envisioned emulating in the magazine. Now, we've achieved this by using images from Flickr, the internet, or creating them ourselves. This affords more authenticity as a brand as content is borne out of creativity and originality, not stock libraries," explains Janna Joseph, editor of HIP2B2.

Chocolate scented technology

This issue's theme is around the senses and its multi-sensory edition even has a chocolate-scented cover that smells when rubbed - something only a handful of publications have done before due to the intricate technology needed to accurately emulate a scent. "This is a real coup, not only because we're among the first to have done so, but because it points to the innovation that we strive to achieve for the brand," adds Joseph.

A 100 000 copies of the magazine are distributed free to schools every quarter. Together with its other touchpoints - such as an interactive website, Facebook page, Brand Ambassador programme and a MXit pool of over 53 000 - the brand fosters the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among South African youth, which Shuttleworth symbolises and endorses.
