New dance magazine for SA

Dance enthusiasts and students in South africa will soon have their own magazine to reflect the rapidly growing local interest in all forms of dance. Named Dance Expressions, the magazine is due to hit the shelves in mid-June 2007 and will be published every alternate month after that.

Dance Expressions is being launched to satisfy the growing demand for a local dance read,” says editor Thumeshni Mudeliar of Dance Expressions Publishing.

With the advent of TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and So You Think You Can Dance, it has become the third-largest interest sport in SA. The country is also brimming with aspiring and established dance talent that deserves a proper showcase.

Four sections

The magazine has been divided into four sections namely, News & Reviews, Dance by Design, Upfront & Personal and Fitness & Finesse. The first of these will highlight upcoming dance events, competition news and results as well as hot industry news.

Different dance genres, from ballet through ballroom and Latin to traditional, will be featured in each edition and highlighted in the Dance by Design section. “This section will also have an additional feature named Techno Step, in which the technical aspects of a particular dance form will be emphasised,” notes Mudeliar.

Each issue will also feature an Upfront & Personal interview that takes a closer look at the lives of some SA dance personalities, while Fitness & Finesse covers a variety of topics relating to the health, wellbeing and appearance of dancers.

“The launch issue will focus on Scottish and belly dancing and will feature the 2007 World Dance exhibition champions, Victor da Silva and Hanna Kurttunen,” says Mudeliar. Other features include make-up and foot treatment advice for dancers.

Dance Expressions will be distributed to selected bookstores and newsagents, as well as dance studios and dance shops. Subscriptions will also be available.
