Digital migration panel tweetup today

South Africa is currently in the process of the digital migration but have South African citizens really been informed about the issues and challenges of this process? Today, Friday, 24 June 2011, 11am - 12 noon, there was a live tweetup exploring digital migration.

The Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) in partnership with the Daily Maverick, the SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition together with expert panellists Robert Nkuna, advisor to the Minister of Communications and a councillor at ICASA and Lara Kantor, group executive: regulatory at e.tv, will discuss various issues.

Join in person at COSATU House, 1 Leyds Street, Braamfontein, on Twitter (#MMAdigimi) or follow on @mediamattersza and @MMA_tweeter for the first of these discussions.

Issues covered include:

  • Why does South Africa need to proceed with digital migration?
  • Who benefits from this process?
  • Is it all about money for the media or will it mean big benefits for viewers?
  • What is the main difference between analogue signal and digital signal?
  • What will you need to do in order to receive the digital signal?
  • What are these so called set top boxes? Like black boxes for the home?
  • How much will they cost?
  • When can we get them?
  • Will you need a new TV?
