Make something at play, says New Channel digital art competition

Art is no longer restricted to sculpture or canvas. Galleries now display digital art alongside traditional work. With New Channel 2004, a competition focusing exclusively on digital art, the work of local designers in this field will be put to the test for the third time.

On the 04th November 2004, Digerati, the digital arm of the TBWA \ network in South Africa, will be hosting the third New Channel art exhibition at Vega Brand Communication School in Johannesburg. Artists who are digitally inclined should submit their entries for this competition by Friday, 29 October 2004, because there is a cash prize of R20 000 up for grabs.

"We think local design would be more inventive, creative, and fun if designers did more freestyle, free-spirited, non commercial work. We know there are digital creatives who have inspired, exciting work to show. We want to exhibit that work, attract visitors to it and reward the best of it," says Jason Levin, Managing Director of Digerati.

This year the theme is "Made at Play" and is a call for designers to get their pixel pad (in whatever form) and create something digital, something new, and most importantly something fun.

"This is the third year running that we have hosted this event," says Levin, "and every year things just get bigger and better, with increased entries, greater quality of work and of-course better prize money, thanks to our sponsor Standard Bank."

The overall winner of this years' competition will receive a R20 000 prize. As with previous years, the any digitally produced work is eligible as long as it was not produced for commercial gain and has not been exhibited before. Runners-up will receive a modular Vega course.

Entries that are inventive, insightful and intelligent will be well-regarded, but the most important judging criterion this year will be playfulness. Entries can be submitted at www.newchannel.co.za before Friday, 29 October 2004. For queries contact Zane, Tel: +27 +11 322 3234.
