SA's online advertisers can now build own display ads - Google

Google yesterday, Monday 20 April 2009, launched the Display Ad Builder in South Africa. The tool is designed to enable online advertisers to create affordable, professional-looking display ads through their AdWords account, and the process is claimed to take only minutes.

The Display Ad Builder is designed to be an easy-to-use tool that lets advertisers, whatever the size of their business, create customised display ads with their own text, images, and logo. The company says the tool can create ads to fit all possible placements across the Google Content Network, including video and game placements.

The tool is designed to enable advertisers to:

  • Select an ad format from 40 professionally designed templates
  • Customise their own message, images, colours and logo
  • Use Cost Per Click (CPC) or Cost Per Thousand impressions (CPM) pricing
  • Measure the success of the display ads by providing performance results including total number of impressions, clicks received, costs and conversions across every website the ad has appeared.

Mohammad Gawdat, MD for emerging markets at Google, said:

"In the past, display advertising has tended to be the preserve of bigger advertisers who could afford the costs of display creation and distribution. Now, we are able to bring ease-of-use, affordability and reach to display advertising through our Display Ad Builder. From today, a South African advertiser will be able to move beyond text ad campaigns without the need to hire a creative designer and media planning team. By providing a range of simple tools we want to encourage advertisers to venture online and we want to encourage those advertisers who already run text ads to move into display."

The procedure


  1. To start creating display ads, and advertiser simply needs to enter its AdWords account, and click the ‘Display Ad Builder' tab on the ‘Create an ad' page within a new or existing campaign. From ‘Campaign Management', click on the appropriate link to create a ‘Keyword Targeted' or ‘Placement Targeted' campaign.
