SA's Kaufman King of Cannes

CANNES, FRANCE/CAPE TOWN, SA: Benjamin Kaufman, of www.7films.co.za in Cape Town, has had his entry accepted in the new CannesAlso photography competition in the Cannes Festival; the picture is one of just a handful selected to be included in The Big Book that delegates will be able to walk through and interact with during the festival.

In the CannesAlso Awards, 11 winning images are chosen from thousands of entries. The award or 'prize' is that the picture gets printed as a full page spread in 'The Big Book' (the size of a small house) and also the 'prestige' of it being selected by Rankin and being displayed at Cannes.

The competition, a new initiative launched by Cannes Lions, is called CannesAlso and this is the first year Cannes has included photography in the festival.

British photographer Rankin judged the entries.

Company competition prompts top entry

Kaufman's picture will be printed in The Big Book, which will be displayed at the Cannes Young Lions festival from 19-25 June; it will also be published into a smaller book and distributed at the festival.

Kaufman took the photograph during an internal competition that 7Films runs monthly. The internal competition was implemented by Lourens van Rensburg and is designed to help train the company's young directors and young producers to develop and maintain a creative eye.

"The Internal competition has helped me a great deal in so many aspects. I went to film school and decided to go into the world of producing. I joined 7Films in January 2010 as a trainee producer and am working under Lourens van Rensburg and Jason Plumbly. Taking part in monthly competitions has helped me understand the creative needs of a director and how to get achieve those needs from a creative and technical perspective," says Kaufman.
