Media must be mum on Manyi's past

NEWSWATCH: Jimmy Manyi, the government's main media man, has told the media to cut out questioning him about his past; apparently he wants to start a 'new chapter', reports Mail & Guardian, which also reports on its on-going tiff with the SABC... Yes, our national broadcaster, our favourite newsmaker, is still in the news, rather than reporting it. Best news, however, is that the British Journal of Photography reports that South African Jodi Bieber has won this year's World Press Photo for her photo of an Afghan woman who was disfigured on the orders of a Taliban commander.

For more:

  • Mail & Guardian: Manyi: Don't ask me about my past... Come on, you can't really blame the guy... Suspended, fired, accused of trying to use a meeting with Norwegian diplomats to drum up a little business for some mate or other, seeing no conflict of interest in being privy to sensitive commercial information - and yet remaining head of the BMF... Well, would you want a past like that brought up all the time? It could be most discomforting.

  • Mail & Guardian: M&G takes on SABC over Gumede report... The SABC and the Mail & Guardian had a go at each other before the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) yesterday, Thursday, 10 February 2011. The hearing follows a complaint from the newspaper regarding an SABC news report in November last year in which businessman Robert Gumede accused investigative reporter Sam Sole of corruption and racism. He apparently said Sole had been paid by one of his (Gumede's) former business partners to publish damaging allegations of corruption against him (Gumede) and then also said that Sole 'goes out to attack black people to say that they are corrupt, they bribe people'.

Pretty strong stuff... but here's a kicker... Fakir Hassen, the SABC's acting GM for broadcasting compliance, apparently said that after getting a statement from the M&G editor, there was then no reason to approach Sole for comment. How's that again? Here you have the very 'Sole' (pardon the pun) of the whole story, and you don't need to get any comment from him? What was it that Govin Reddy said recently? Ah, yes... SABC reporters are "pathetic".

  • British Journal of Photography: Jodi Bieber wins World Press Photo... The woman's 'crime'? Fleeing her abusive in-laws.
