Semenya drives up Sport24 traffic

From an unknown 18-year-old, the South African athlete Caster Semenya has become a global media sensation, from newspaper front pages, to discussions on Sky News and being featured on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, usually dominated by baseball, American football or basketball. The same is true of South Africa, especially Sport24.co.za.

According to Nielsen, 79 339 South Africans visited www.sport24.co.za on Thursday 20 August 2009, the day after Semenya's success in the 800m race at the World Championships in Berlin.

Sadly, the news was not driven by her success, but rather around the doubts about her gender but there was support for Semenya from Sport24 readers.

Only once this year has that visitor number been bettered, that being on 29 June, the Monday after the Confederations Cup ended, the Springboks won the second test against the Lions to take the three Test series, Schalk Burger was banned for eye gouging and Peter de Villiers press conference performances attracted attention.
