South Africa Tourism, SABC partnership delivers winning combination

A partnership between South African Tourism and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been hailed as a reason for the success of Tourism month, during which South Africans were afforded new insights into their culturally rich country.

During the months of August to October, the SABC broadcasted the "Licence to Discover South Africa" competition, through radio and television, supported also by the print media, showcasing the country's different holiday destinations.

The aim of the initiative was to encourage all South Africans to become tourists of their own country and experience the beauty of their own "backyard."

The competition was open to all valid television licence holders, with close to R300 000 worth of holiday prizes awarded to winners from across the country. Independent newspapers and Engen quickshops also distributed entry forms.

"The SABC was proud to be an active participant in this magnificent competition. We are certain that it drove the message home to all South Africans to discover the hidden gems in their country," said SABC GCEO, Peter Matlare, in a statement.

The partnership proved a winning combination with thousands of entries pouring in from all corners of the country estimated at 15 000 nationally.

"It is recognised worldwide that local travel is the bedrock of the tourism market. South Africa has so much to offer its own people, most of whom don't even realise what opportunities exist to have truly memorable experiences in their own country.

"We believe that it is through partnerships and initiatives such as these that we can take the message to all South Africans, from all walks of life: Discover the beauty and magnificence of South Africa," said SA Tourism CEO Cheryl Carolus.

The winners would be travelling to some of South Africa's finest tourist establishments on a fully-inclusive getaway package worth up to R25 000.
