SA to host world summit on media for children

South Africa will be hosting the fifth World Summit on Media for Children (5WSMC), 24 - 28 March 2007, around the key theme "Media as a tool for global peace and democracy", and a press briefing is being held in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 18 January, 11am - 3pm.

Sport as a peace builder is a sub theme of the 5WSMC. The summit will include workshops and master-classes for young sport journalists in the run up to 2010.

The 5WSMC is being organised by the Children and Broadcasting Foundation for Africa, in partnership with SABC, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), and the Department of Communications and with support from Telkom and the MDDA.

The 5WSMC will bring together 1000 local and international media professionals, government and NGOs working in the area of quality media for children with a specific aim of developing a comprehensive children's media policy framework, which seeks to highlight sustainable solutions for high quality content. Three hundred local and international children, aged between 13 and 16 years, will also participate in the event in all areas of media development, production and distribution.

Key international partners with a focus on media and sport development will be in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg to kick off the summit with a walkabout at the Phutadijchaba Community Centre in Alexandra, aimed at establishing Alexandra as a twin venue to Sandton for the 5WSMC, where a mini football world cup will be staged.
