Winners of Your Street Cape Town challenge announced
Design Indaba has announced the winners of the R250 000 Your Street Cape Town Challenge, which called on designers to come up with plans to beautify their street. The four winning ideas included a walking route, fireproof shacks, urban gardens and public community facilities.
In accordance with its terms and conditions, the money allocated to these designers will have to be used in the implementation of the project. A timeline for realising the project will also be discussed with the designers in days to come.
Winners
- Acre Road, Kensington - R100 000 to Lorena Pasquini, Caitlynne Francis, Mark Henning and Hannah Williams for a community-based design solution to improve the lives of the Acre Road community using low-cost facilities to cater for positive community activities.
- Violet's Walk - R50 000 to Luke Pedersen, Jenny Pedersen, Kirsty Rielly, Jess Pedersen and Katherine Spindler for a clearly marked walking route in Woodstock with resting benches placed strategically along the way.
- Repainting shacks - R50 000 to Ashley Stemmet, Porky Hefer and Tsai with Urban Mosaic for an aesthetically pleasing way to solve the problem of shack fires. Urban Mosaic proposes painting the exteriors of shacks with a fire-retardant paint.
- Let Us Grow - R50 000 to Andrew Cole, Rene Bakker, Andrea Ferry and Pieter H Botha for an urban farming initiative that supplies fresh produce to urban dwellers, while also creating employment.
The Your Street Gauteng Challenge is still ongoing and entrants do not necessarily have to live in Johannesburg to have an idea for how to own, love and improve the streets of the City of Gold and surrounds.
