Pigeon video invites visitors to Johannesburg's Joy of Jazz Festival

TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg was recently commissioned to create a video that would advertise the Johannesburg's annual Joy of Jazz festival to the public, in a fun and intriguing way. (video)

Its team descended on Pigeon Square in Johannesburg in an attempt to lure birds to 'play' a set of instruments with their beaks and feet using seeds and popcorn, much to the delight of passers-by.

A variety of different instruments, including a drum kit, a keyboard and a couple of guitars were set up and rigged with microphones, linked to speakers and recording equipment. The process wasn't an easy one, as the pigeons proved to be unwilling musicians at the onset and once their interest increased, some of the louder noises scared them off again.

After a full day in Pigeon Square, the different channels were tweaked and remixed to create the embedded video. "The video has already received over 62 000 hits and is growing every day. I think this is a great reward for our brave client for taking a leap of faith in making a non-traditional advertising piece like this," concludes Mike Groenewald, creative director.
