DA feeling tender? WC comms deal to be probed

NEWSWATCH: The Public Protector, she of cop HQ lease deal fame, is to probe the Western Cape communications tender following a Sunday Times story that the tender was not handled properly (the paper later issued an apology of sorts), writes The Argus and Eyewitness News. Meanwhile, a number of publications report on the old favourite, the POIB, and what the ANC refers to as "snot-nosed critics" of the contentious bill.

For more:

  • The Argus: Public Protector to probe tender... The Sunday Times bandied about figures to the effect that the controversial tender was worth a billion. Slightly out by, oh, a couple of noughts, since the agency that won the tender will earn a little less that that... make that a great deal less. In any event, however, leaping into the fray to fight corruption on every front, some ANC members lodged a formal complaint and now the Public protector will have a look-see at this tender issue, reports Eyewitness News.

  • Cape Argus: MPs slam 'snot-nosed' critics... Shame, don't blame Ronnie Kasrils if he's snot pleased... MPs processing the POIB are unhappy that Kasrils has criticised their work, so - as so often - resorting to sparkling repartee and incisive wit, they decided to use the term "snot-nosed" to trash the former intelligence minister.

  • Times Live: ANC pushes for secrecy... Anyone would think they have something to hide... What a thought! The ANC says it doesn't want secrets automatically declassified after 20 years. So in the spirit of transparency we can only say ****** ** ********* **** ** *****. ****** ***! Got the picture?

  • Legal Brief: Secrecy Bill arm-wrestle drags on... It seems that even if you are a tea lady, be afraid, very afraid if the POIB becomes law. Legal Brief also reports that the secrecy bill deliberations may be cut short... and that some critics believe Secrecy Bill an 'anathema to the freedoms we fought for...'

  • Business Day: Pressure mounts on MPs to finalise 'secrecy bill'... What about... now here's an idea... shelving discussions until our MPs come back from their spring break? After all, the POIB has got many critics hot under the collar, so what about going the whole nine yards?

  • Cape Times: Editorial: Toxic gruel... Oh, dear, not only are some critics "snot-nosed" but other people haven't done their homework... apparently.
