Comments by Gerry Human (Chairperson) for February 2003 judging:

Discussions today were lively and enthusiastic. We reminded ourselves that we're doing this thing simply to recognise outstanding work. Oddly, that's not always as obvious as it seems.

Simplicity and clarity were the flavour of the month, hardly a line of copy in sight. Not necessarily a good thing, but the long copy stuff just wasn't good enough.

NEWSPAPER
The clear winner shows the familiar sportsman's nose plaster attached to a BMW grille. Much debate over the art direction of second place, magnanimity winning through.

MAGAZINE
Winner users books sculpturally to highlight categories i.e. terrorism, football. Although there was a tie for second place, it was agreed to only put Axe "Restraining Order" through to Ad of the Year.

OUTDOOR
Outdoor proved to be one of the strongest categories, resulting in first, second and third going through to the Ad of the Year. Winner, WWF's campaign cleverly uses the actual rope on street poles to highlight the plight of wild animals.

RADIO
Marginal difference in scores, but the panel stuck to the order. Humour and slick production coming through here. It was felt that third placed Plascon would have been better received had there only been one in the series.

TV
Winner is an unexpected take on the smoke brigade... and office balcony collapses due to all the puffers standing around... smoking can damage your health etc. Funny second place, showing the driver of a nasty car ducking because he is embarrassed about it, goes through to Ad of the Year.
