      General manager

      Oryx Desert Salt, an FMCG company based in Muizenberg, urgently seeks your leadership expertise and entrepreneurial nature as a general manager to manage a growing international business. Your role will entail managing the commercial, financial, and operational aspects of the business alongside the founder and CEO, who will assume full responsibility for sales, marketing, and new product development, and with the support of the non-executive directors via weekly Exco meetings.

      Reporting to the CEO, you will be required to perform the following roles and responsibilities:

      People
      • Managing the team
      • Ensuring the values of the business are being driven and maintained at all times
      • Ensuring all staff are working as a team
      • Managing priorities and the flow of action items
      • Ensuring quarterly co-assessment of staff performance
      • Ensuring that staff interact with suppliers and customers in a manner consistent with Oryx values
      • Overseeing hiring processes, job specs, CV reviews, and interviews for new staff requirements
      • Managing leave
      • Overseeing employment contracts and temporary contract packer agreements
      • Overseeing warehouse staff and ensuring roles and responsibilities are being actioned
      • Upskilling admin and warehouse staff in their current positions
      • Setting warehouse and admin staff KPIs and KPPs
      Food safety management
      • Ensuring the FSMS system is being run and adhered to efficiently and in accordance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, including the R638; FSSC 22000 (ISO 22000:2018 and ISO/TS 22002-1:2009) standards
      • Managing weekly, quarterly, and monthly FS management review meetings, implementing and overseeing actions
      • Attending to all CARS raised and ensuring closure within the required time
      • Managing internal audits and working with internal auditors to ensure the FSMS is up to date and has minimal findings during annual external audits and certification renewal
      Operations
      • Assessing and monitoring receiving, invoicing, packing, dispatch, and stock systems
      • Overseeing the warehouse and admin office to ensure everything is running efficiently and optimally
      • Supporting the packing team for optimal and efficient packing processes for maximum finished goods outputs
      • Advising on any upgrade in systems, sourcing, budgeting, and action implementation on board sign-off
      • Managing weekly team meetings
      • Overseeing shipping exports and imports
      ERP (Odoo)
      • Maintaining Odoo, ensuring sales orders, invoicing, purchase orders, manufacturing orders, vendor bills, and accounting transactions are accurately captured in the system daily
      Stock, production, and procurement
      • Overseeing and checking the quality of stock arriving (raw materials and finished product)
      • Ensuring best pricing from suppliers, negotiating any price increases, and/or sourcing new suppliers
      • Assessing stock variances
      • Ensuring stock levels are sufficient at all times in each of the required warehouses (CT, GP, KZN, EC, Amazon, USA, or other), with bimonthly checks of stock versus sales
      • Checking POs placed
      • Overseeing the delivery of stock to distributors to ensure sufficient stock for WFM, Amazon, USA, PnP, and Spar DCs
      • Establishing cost per SKU
      • Setting annual list prices based on costs
      • Informing the CEO/Exco of costings/margin changes
      • Supporting new product development (suppliers and pricing)
      • Forecasting import orders (grinder heads, Madagascan pepper, bottles, other), accounting for logistics delays and other risk factors
      Supplier relationship management
      • Dealing with any supplier issues
      • Communicating with suppliers to ensure smooth delivery of POs/BOMs
      • Negotiating prices and looking for new suppliers to increase margin
      Finance and admin
      • Managing admin staff including accountant and debtors clerk
      • Overseeing the preparation of monthly management reports, analysis vs budget
      • Reviewing and maintaining live 12-month cash flow forecast, updated with actuals within five days of month-end
      • Analysing and commenting on weekly sales information (weekly sales, Amazon, WFM)
      • Setting and agreeing on the annual budget, working with the non-exec financial director
      • Preparing three times a year board meeting packs
      Sales support
      • Analysing Amazon, WFM, UNFI, iLevel, PnP, and Checkers report info to pick up on gaps and potential problems and taking action to drive sales across all stores
      • Actioning monthly exit and obsolete stock reports
      • Actioning special client needs
      • Ensuring all international orders are packed efficiently with special customer requirements and shipped in the shortest production time
      • Analysing monthly sales reporting from Odoo
      • Reporting on Amazon performance
      • Being responsible for the operations, finance, and admin of the business to ensure the CEO can focus on sales, marketing, and NPD
      • Supporting the CEO with sales reports, analysis, and ensuring no OoS (out of stock) in any warehouse for smooth and efficient sales
      Project support
      • Supporting the CEO with research, budgeting, and implementation of projects such as B-Corp certification, carbon-neutral certification, and any others agreed necessary for consumer brand build
      Exco support
      • Holding bi-monthly operations management meetings (beginning of the month) – agenda set 24 hours prior together with the CEO
      • Holding bi-monthly Exco management meetings (mid to end of the month) – agenda set 24 hours prior together with the CEO
      • Preparing the monthly pack for the Exco meeting
      • Agreeing on the agenda with the CEO and distributing it
      • Being responsible for maintaining the action list for the meeting
      • Circulating management meeting action items 24 hours post-meeting
      Board support
      • Preparing the board pack three times a year for submission one week prior to the board meeting
      • Agreeing on the agenda with the CEO and chair
      • Ensuring board members receive the pack within 48 hours prior to the meeting
      • Taking minutes of board meetings and circulating them
      • Participating in strategy sessions with the board
      • Fulfilling the role of company secretary to the board
      Requirements:

      Qualifications:
      • Business degree/diploma
      Experience/skills:
      • Proven leadership ability in a senior management role
      • Experience in building out and managing teams
      • Experience in a manufacturing and production environment
      • Commercial experience in negotiating with suppliers and clients
      • Advanced Excel proficiency/experience in creating and managing Excel spreadsheets
      • Knowledge and experience in working with international clients
      • Complete fluency in English with excellent command, both written and spoken
      Advantageous:
      • Experience with the Odoo ERP system
      • Experience with logistics, customs, and rebates
      Attributes:
      • Strong and efficient communication skills, and effective direct communication with CEO, customers, suppliers, and all departments within the organisation
      • A professional attitude with a friendly and positive disposition is key to the workplace
      • Ability to manage up and down
      • Ability to maintain confidentiality, have integrity, and be commercial, showing a keenness to understand the business
      • Demonstrated organisational skills are required
      • Attention to detail and accuracy, be organised, prioritise varied workloads, and work to strict deadlines
      • Ambitious, flexible, and team orientated
      • Must be a self-starter
      • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple tasks, and meet tight deadlines
