The existing transmitter is 26 years old and the station is experiencing countless problems in maintaining the old technology. After recent lightning damage the transmitter was also unable to broadcast to listeners on a number of occasions.
In the light of these circumstances, Radio Pulpit brought an application to ICASA last week for the urgent replacement of the transmitter. The station bought a transmitter more than a year ago to be installed once the licence application is granted. It is however impossible to wait any longer due to damage to the existing transmitter.
Dr Roelf Petersen, CEO of Radio Pulpit, expressed his satisfaction with this decision and also confirmed the positive attitude Radio Pulpit is experiencing from the broadcasting authority. He said that the first building blocks will now be laid for the establishment of the future broadcasting platform of Radio Pulpit. He also emphasised the fact that the replacement and installation of the new transmitter was made possible by the contribution of financial supporters and listeners of the station.
The uniqueness of this new transmitter is also very significant. This will be the first radio transmitter on South African soil that will also be able to broadcast digitally. It is also capable of broadcasting simultaneously in analog and digital should it be necessary. The station foresees that digital test broadcasts will be conducted in the future, after the necessary consent has been given by the authorities.
Listeners will be informed of how they would be affected during the installation process and on which frequency they will be able to listen to their favourite programs.
