Top model Agyness Deyn heads to Durban

The 031 collections - presented by Mr Price and showcasing eight established Durban-based designers and eight new designers - has invited British supermodel Agyness Deyn as a guest stylist and judge for its New Designers competition.

Deyn is expected to bring a unique perspective to the three days of shows that are due to take place behind the Moses Mabhida stadium.

The 031 collections will feature Durban designers including Terrence Bray, Ruff Tung, Nguni Shades, The Holmes Bros, Amanda Laird Cherry, Francois Vedemme, Sibusiso Msimang and Leigh Schubert.

The New Designer prize includes a R20000 cash prize from Mr Price and a mentorship programme with the Mr Price design team, and an opportunity to conceptualise their range to be sold in selected Mr Price stores.

According to the 031 collections' press release, the organisers opened the competition to designers aged between 18 and 26 years, either studying fashion design full-time and in their final year or who have a qualification in fashion.

The judges were looking for original storyboards with out-of-the-box yet wearable fashion that will have visual impact on the runway.

They called for attention to detail that showed obvious design talent and style.

The catch is, the designers and students needed to be based in or studying in KwaZulu-Natal.

With all the furore surrounding the round of fashion weeks South Africa produces, it's interesting to note this is not a fashion week, merely a showcase of Durban talent, held in Durban.

Tickets for the 031 collections, from 19 - 21 May 2011, are available through www.computicket.co.za.
