Fashion & Homeware News South Africa

No glamour at Fashion Week

South African Fashion Week, which started with an off-site show at The Firs in Rosebank on Thursday, 25 March 2010, was a bit flat this year. The wow effect that the show is known for was absent.

A lot of designers cut corners and most designs lacked creativity and flare. The fabrics were cheap and the colours were not appealing.

Things started on a rather weird note when Clive Rundle, who had an side show in his shop at The Firs in Rosebank, showed five hideous items “inspired by the wind”.

Five semi-naked models paraded the items that looked as if they were snatched from hobos.

When the show was over, to the disappointment of fashion snobs, journalists, and bloggers, the audience, which included men who worked in a nearby restaurant, were drooling over the models in disbelief over their walking freely on a public stage half-naked.

The following day saw Mantsho in its elements with disappointing designs you would never associate with African fabric. But it was Loxion Kulca that carried the day with drop dead gorgeous designs.

Day three was the most interesting of them all, with heavyweights like Terrence Bray, Darkie, Diamond Face Couture and Ephymol strutting their stuff. But out of that crowd Darkie stole the show with its Marvin Gaye theme.

The show left everyone mumbling about the dropping standards. It left many in fashion circles wondering if the poor standard was as the result of Sanlam pulling out as main sponsor.
