Smith fit for semi-finals

Proteas captain Graeme Smith announced on Friday that he would be available for selection for the Nashua Cape Cobras for next weekend's Standard Bank Pro20 semi-finals. This is, of course, subject to the proviso that the Cobras qualify for the knock-out stage.

Clarity on that subject will be reached this weekend when the final rounds of league matches take place. The tournament has a new format for the semi-finals which are now best-of-three clashes.

“The medical team have given me the go ahead to resume playing,” said a relieved Smith. “They are very happy with my hand injury and they feel they can manage my elbow through the home series against Australia.

“I will get back into the nets next week and hopefully the Cobras will make it through to the last four.”

At the moment they are second on the log but have completed their playing programme.

There was further good news for the Proteas when JP Duminy fetched one of the highest prices at the IPL auction on Friday of $ (US) 950 000 from the Mumbai franchise.

It is further confirmation of his rising standing as a world-class cricketer.

Another South African, Tyron Henderson, drew a successful bid of $650 000 from Rajasthan.
