Walk and talk about Jo'burg

The Johannesburg Tourism Company has embraced a new concept to promote city tourism: Walk & Talk Tours developed by Beryl Porter. This system allows anyone, at the touch of a button, to be their own Tour Guide.

Walk & Talk Tours were first launched in Sandton where a series of easy-to-identify tourism sign posts were erected in the area. These sign posts reflect a telephone number which can be dialed to access short commentary on numerous places of interest such as the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, Nelson Mandela Square, Norscot Manor, Sandton Convention Centre etc. Tourists have a choice between eight different languages. The system is designed for locals and tourists to travel at their own pace. Calls are charged at normal cellular rates.

"In three minutes you're able to learn about a site's history, associated personalities, geography, architecture design, and services offered. Through the Walk & Talk Tours you could be your own adventurer, whether you are a local or a tourist," says Deon Viljoen, CEO of the Johannesburg Tourism Company.

With the help of the Johannesburg Tourism Company, Porter's Talk Tour Self Guiding System will now be extended to other areas of Johannesburg. The first part of "The Long Tour to Freedom", which takes the 'struggle' route, from Liliesleaf Farm to Soweto, is the next phase of the self guiding tour to be implemented.

Porter's future plan is for the "The Long Tour to Freedom" to start at Robin Island in the Cape and stretch all the way through to Soweto in Johannesburg.

"Johannesburg has so much more to offer and Beryl's Talk Tour Self Guiding System will play a major role in revitalising tourism in our Golden City," concludes Viljoen.
