Call for Boss of the Year nominations

The Boss of the Year Award is calling for nominations of bosses with the qualities to become icons of leadership in South Africa's workplace. Now in its 19th year, the award is organised by Dictum Publishers, with MTN SA Foundation as the new patron and main sponsor.

The workplace leader who will receive this year's award as the top boss in the country could be a CEO or a team leader, an entrepreneur or a boss in the public sector, the head of an institution or a professional practice.

This award is in a class of its own due to the fact that the employees have the power to decide whether a boss is good enough to be entered. This is not a decision of the board of directors or the shareholders but of those people who daily witness the leadership skills of their boss.

“Only inspiring leadership leads to exceptional results.”

Says Eunice Maluleke, head of MTN SA Foundation, “Our support of this award is based on the leadership challenges that South Africa, as a nation at large, faces. And whether you zone in on sport, education or commerce and industry, the challenge is fundamentally about stimulating inspiring Leadership. Only inspiring leadership leads to exceptional results.

“A new kind of leadership is required all round - the kind of leadership that is alert to the very particular demands of today's socio-economic realities! Furthermore, leadership today must be pervasive - for us to compete successfully, our organisations have to have good leadership at every rung!

“South African places of work are the best breeding ground for the positive breeding of new enlightened leaders, and that is where our collective efforts, as MTN SA Foundation with Dictum Publishers, will focus a significant energy.

“I invite people who have a good leader in their organisation to let us know about this person - and in so doing, becoming an active agent in promoting better leadership practices.” she concludes

Employees who believe that their boss is the kind of boss who motivates and makes staff feel important, provides clear goals and direction, is committed and positive, are encouraged to fill in the nomination form below.

Apart from the honour of being rated amongst the best bosses in South Africa, not only the recipient of the award and his/her nominator, but all the finalists and their nominators also receive prizes.

To nominate a boss, the first step is to complete the nomination form available on www.dictum.co.za. From the nominations received, 15 finalists are selected. These candidates are expected to undergo a telephone interview and the nominators will have to complete a second questionnaire before the six finalists are chosen.

Closing date

The closing date for this year's nominations is 22 July 2008 and the six finalists will meet a panel of judges on Saturday 6 October. As in the past, the winner will be announced on the National Day of the Boss, 16 October, at a banquet lunch held at the Montecasino Ballroom in Johannesburg.
