Eating with a conscience

The Waterkloof Restaurant situated on the estate, located outside Somerset West on the M9 Sir Lowry's Pass Village Road, is reportedly the first restaurant in the Helderberg to sign up with StreetSmart SA to help street children to live a viable life in their communities. It will launch on 27 September 2010.

StreetSmart restaurants raise funds by adding a R5 donation to each table's bill. The donation is voluntary and diners have the option to donate more if they wish to. These funds are then ploughed back into the immediate communities to assist with learning, skills training and family reunification programmes. The Helderberg committee will select a local beneficiary working with street children.

The non-profit organisation, dedicated to the social integration and upliftment of street children was launched in Cape Town in 2005 under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. It has since expanded its footprint to include leading restaurants in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

Since its inception, it has raised just over R3 million through its programmes in 74 restaurants strong.
