Kloof's king at Michelangelo

The Du Toitskloof Wine Cellar achieved excellent results at this year's Michelangelo International Wine Awards announced over the weekend. The cooperative cellar, known for its value wines, received nine awards, one of which was a Grand d'Or.

In addition to the Grand d'Or for its 2008 Red Muscatel, the cellar, located on the Worcester side of the Du Toitskloof Pass, also received three gold medals (for its 2007 Nebbiolo, 2007 Noble Late Harvest and its 2007 Hanepoot Jerepiko) and five silvers. Cellar master Philip Jordaan said he was particularly delighted with the gold medal awarded to the Nebbiolo.

“This was the first wine we have made from this great Italian cultivar, which is still a rarity in South Africa. The grapes were the first harvested from very young vines on the farm of one of our members. It also won gold at last year's SA National Young Wine Show. I believe this cultivar, on which the fame rests of Italy's great Barolo wines, can do extremely well in certain riverine areas of the Breede River Valley and I have high hopes for this wine as the vines grow older,” Jordaan said.

The awards took place on August 13 at the Lord Charles Hotel, Somerset West.
