NEWSWATCH: According to the Maynard Institute in the US, a South African journalist, Beauregard Lucian Tromp, who has been accepted into the Nieman Fellowship program at Harvard University, has apparently resigned from his job after his employer, e.tv, allegedly refused him leave to take part in the program.

According to the Maynard Institute posting, e.tv explained that Tromp had been with the station less than a year - so apparently that is the reason he couldn't go.Only those taking the decision at e.tv would be familiar with the reasoning behind it, but one would have thought that having an employee accepted into such a prestigious program, company policy regarding leave of absence (or whatever) would be waived.
