Two quit as MPs take SABC board to task

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi stood by and watched in silence as SABC officials tied themselves in knots, defending Hlaudi Motsoeneng in Parliament, while two board members quit abruptly, plunging the dysfunctional structure into a deeper crisis.
Two quit as MPs take SABC board to task

Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso's impromptu resignations at an emergency meeting of the communications portfolio committee on Wednesday resulted in MPs giving the remaining four board members an ultimatum: quit or be forced out through a parliamentary inquiry as soon as the end of October.

The SABC is due to hold a briefing on Thursday, but did not give details.

Naidoo and Mavuso said the SABC board was dysfunctional and distanced themselves from its defence of Motsoeneng's controversial appointment as group executive for corporate affairs.

If the remaining board members don't take the invitation, then the committee will go ahead with an inquiry into their fitness to hold office.

Should they quit, Parliament would appoint an interim board. As it stands, the current, fourmember board cannot function or take crucial decisions. It is meant to have 12 members, and needs nine including the three executives - CEO, chief financial officer and chief operating officer - for a quorum. Six other board members resigned between 2014 and 2015.

It also emerged in Parliament that Bessie Tugwana, who had occupied the position of group executive for corporate affairs, is now acting chief operating officer at the SABC.

Chairman Mbulaheni Maguvhe, board member Ndivhoniswani Tshidzumba and acting CEO James Aguma insisted that Motsoeneng's appointment was above board. Leah Khumalo and Nomvuyo Mhlakaza were absent because of prior commitments.

Motsoeneng was part of the delegation, but did not utter a word and instead giggled throughout the tense exchange between the SABC and MPs, who were mostly united in their condemnation of the public broadcaster's recent actions.

Maguvhe said Motsoeneng's appointment was legal and procedurally correct. Also, the SABC has taken Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report on the public broadcaster on review and the matter was sub judice, he added.

Media Monitoring Africa said: "The portfolio committee's approach went some way in restoring credibility to Parliament."
