Cannes Press and Outdoor winners

The following South African agencies won awards at the Cannes Press and Outdoor Awards ceremony on Tuesday 18 June 2002:
  • Lowe Bull Calvert Pace - two golds
  • Saatchi & Saatchi Johannesburg - silver
  • Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town - bronze
  • TBWA Hunt Lascaris - bronze
  • Lowe Bull Calvert Pace has been awarded two golds in the Press and Outdoor category for their Dulux "Any Colour You Like" campaign.

    Saatchi & Saatchi Johannesburg won a silver for their Guinness outdoor campaign while Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town won a bronze for outdoor, for Oil of Olay.

    TBWA Hunt Lascaris won a bronze Lion in the press category for their Bic Crossword ad.

    Saatchi & Saatchi in London won the Grand Prix for press for a travel ad for Club 18-30.

    Leo Burnett Oslo, Norway, picked up the Outdoor Grand Prix for its client Oslo Piercing Studio.

    There were no South Africans represented on the judging panel, with 160 winners in the Press and Outdoor section.

    The following agencies got onto the shortlist:

    • TBWA Hunt Lascaris for the Tiger Brands Spray & Cook price tags ad, the BMW X5 Dental Floss, Bic crossword, Operation Snowball and C1 Boufant.
    • The Jupiter Drawing Room for Nike's Lie Detector and Jogging ads;
    • Saatchi & Saatchi for Oil of Olay's Hourglass and Tock Tick, three Guinness ads, Adopt a Minefield and Lea & Perrins 911;
    • Y&R Gitam for Land Rover's Kiljoy ad;
    • Lowe Bull Calvert Pace for all the Dulux "Any colour you want" ads;
    • Grey Worldwide for two Envirocin ads
    • Sonnenberg Murphy Leo Burnett for a Salvation Army Child Abuse ad.

    The jury awarding Lions for Press and Outdoor was looking to inspire budding creatives rather than reward established, trophy-laden professionals. That was the principle laid down by Jeffrey Goodby, co-chairman of Goodby, Silverstein and Partners of the US, in announcing who had won trophies in the two sections. Judges were looking for "young and inspirational" examples and the intention "is to inspire people to make great ads next year."
