Getting a job; getting your foot in the door.

I have read various forums posted on this website about how had it is to get a job, internship, experience and all the other thin gas that come thereafter.

It is interesting to see people posting their views on how difficult into a job. I studied a one year course towards graphic design / dtp in college after matric. After that I was fortunate enough to land a job as an administrative clerk for a government department. It wasn't related what-so-ever to what I studied for but it was work and was paying enough and besides at that time I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life or my career as such. It was a contract that expired. Thereafter and I was unemployed and seemed unemployable. But neither less I didnt sit at home and cried my eyes out. I was out there looking for something that i could do. I approached a lot of companies big medium small you name it and at one time I even went on to open my own thing and that still didn't work... After all long try I was lucky enough to end up in a new very small design agency with guys from Tech. who believed I couldnt offer them anything beyond their skills as they are from a Technikon and they have 3yrs diplomas and degrees but the did take me in anyways for R500 pm, never given any big work but I held on to this for my sake of learning more and proving myself to them the i was of value to their company. At that time I had a son and my responsibilities were huge but managed because of my parents.

It took me at least 5yrs to be able to find what I call a proper job from a leading real estate agency as their graphic assistant. That was the starting point of my life / career. still i wasn't earning a posh salary but it was good. End of last year I managed to get myself into a huge corporation.

Since the year i have obtain my diploma, 1999 i have worked for at least 10 companies earning nothing more than R2000.00, it went up and down but I was not at home and I was learning more... I have been to at least 40 interviews and last year i had about 14 and i cant say how many c.vs i have sent out. but it never killed me. I kept on trying.

So to all those who think they have had enough because you either black or white, because you are qualified and deserve more in life guess what we are all better with or without what you have, the truth is there are jobs out there and there are thousands of you looking for those jobs and companies hire who they think is best for them at that time, it doesn't mean you are not good. Keep on trying after all what is the worse that could happen, I asked myself then.
