Jerusalema hits the mainstream screen

Award-winning South African film Jerusalema is finally hitting mainstream cinemas on Thursday, 29 August 2009. It's been a long journey, from filming on the streets of Hillbrow and the world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, to opening the 29th Durban International Film Festival and a Best Actor Award for lead actor Rapulana Seiphemo.

It also won the Audience Award for best film at the Durban Film Festival. Internationally, the film has enjoyed critical acclaim, and was featured on CNN's Inside Africa show last weekend.

Inspired by true events, Jerusalema takes a realistic and unwavering look into the gritty underbelly of crime, corruption and transgression in the new South Africa. The film chronicles the rise and fall of anti-hero LUCKY KUNENE from the streets of Soweto to the high-rise buildings of downtown Johannesburg. This is what's happening on the streets today. Welcome to the New Jerusalem.

The film, directed by Ralph Ziman (Hearts & Minds, The Zookeeper), stars Rapulana Seiphemo (Tsotsi, Muvangho, Generations), Jeffrey Sekele, Ronnie Nyakale, Shelly Meskin, Malusi Skenjana, Robert Hobbs, Kenneth Nkosi and newcomers Jafta Mamabolo and Motlatsi Mahloko.
