New technology drives bank card use

A product which saves time and cuts the cost of communication between credit/debit card terminals and the banks was launched last year and is achieving significant success in the marketplace. Well-known retail chains, shopping malls and the hospitality sector have all seized this new technology.

Called the XLink Communicator, the product utilises GPRS and cell-based technology to provide merchants with an alternative communication channel. It is the first service of its kind in South Africa and has been fully-approved by ABSA, First National Bank, Nedbank and Standard Bank to provide cell-based, electronic funds transfer (EFT) communication services.

The XLink Communicator, which has been approved by ICASA, works via a communicator device, which is connected to the merchant's credit/debit card terminal and interfaces with MTN, Vodacom and the banks. GPRS technology results in increased connection speed, while other features include increased security, reliability and accessibility in remote areas.

XLink has been installed at over 3 000 sites (2 500 customers) across the country. The packages range from R177 per month. XLink also offers customised packages to suit corporates and retail chains. The fixed-cost model ensures that these large groups are able to budget with ease.

XLink has regional offices in Durban and Cape Town, together with 32 trained technicians who provide national support with installations, maintenance and technical assistance. XLink has also invested heavily in its support services and has 28 business partners in the EFT point-of-sale market.
