Woolworths goes greener

The idea that vegetarian eating is the same-old vegetables and potato on the plate - but without the meat - is thankfully an outdated notion. The rise of vegetarianism has resulted in consumer demand for tasty vegetarian meals that take nutritional balance into consideration. Building on the success of it's vegetarian range, Woolworths has now improved and expanded it's vegetarian food offering.

Woolworths has recognised that there is a need to assist consumers in making a healthy vegetarian lifestyle much easier. In addition, the expansion of this popular range makes it possible for non-vegetarians to eat 'meat-free meals' on a much more regular basis.

As many vegetarians will attest, maintaining a varied and balanced vegetarian diet over the long term can be challenging. The key to a healthy vegetarian diet is to eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes to ensure that the body gets all the essential daily nutrients and enough protein along with a regulated intake of fats. Vegetarians also need to be aware that certain nutrients are easily obtained from animal products but plant foods need to be selected with care in order to meet the body's requirements. The body needs certain quantities of iron, calcium, zinc and Vitamin B12 every day.

Woolworths have introduced a number of new vegetarian lines to its successful range. These are products that have been specially developed by the Woolworths Chefs and consultant dietician, to make the sufficient daily intake of proteins and other nutrients, convenient and delicious.

This range of heat-and-eat, balanced meals has now been enhanced with the addition of Vegetarian Lentil Moussaka and Vegetarian Mushroom Stroganoff. The new Woolworths vegetarian snack meals are ready to eat 200g portions of Vegetarian Spaghetti Bolognese, Chilli Con Carne, Macaroni Soya Mince, Butternut and Feta Risotto, as well as Butternut and Chickpea Casserole.

A range of individual products will also be introduced. These products include Vegetarian Tofu, Vegetarian Reduced Fat Tofu Mayonnaise, Vegetarian Soya Mince, Vegetarian Chickpea and Butternut Steaklets, as well as Vegetarian Burger Patties, Vegetable Nuggets and Vegetarian Meatballs.

All Woolworths foods suitable for vegetarians have lists of ingredients and nutritional tables printed on the product packaging, making it easy for vegetarians to calculate their intake of these important nutrients and ensure that they get their recommended daily allowances. The green "V" logo on the front of the packaging makes all these products easily identifiable in-store.
