MTN introduces tourist cams

Just a few short months after installing cameras at some of Johannesburg's most busy traffic intersections, MTN has installed an additional four cameras at popular tourist destinations across South Africa, including Durban Beach, Table Mountain, Devil's Peak and Camps Bay.

Tourist cams are a continuation of the highly popular MTN Traffic Cams situated at various intersections across Johannesburg. The MTN Traffic Cams work through cameras placed on MTN radio masts at various interchanges, giving motorists live feeds with Multi Media Messaging Service (MMS) technology. Provided that users have MMS enabled handsets, they will be able to receive live feeds of what traffic activity is at specific intersections. The MTN Traffic Cams offered at this stage are the: Buccleugh, Gillooly, Rivonia, Grayston, Allandale, N1 East and the JHB-PTA interchanges. Further expansion into other areas is planned for the near future.

Customers now have access to advanced mobile services which enable them to check out the weather conditions on their favourite beach before they leave their home, or from a meeting in Johannesburg to watch the sun set over Table Mountain in Cape Town.

Donovan Smith, general manager of consumer marketing at MTN South Africa says, "The feedback we have received to date about MTN's Traffic Cams has been extremely positive. Based on popular demand, it only seemed logical for MTN to implement this pioneering technology in different centres, and for different uses, across South Africa."

Tourist cams are a way of introducing customers to the MMS experience and as such are offered free of charge to MTN customers for a trial introductory period.

To access the camera menu MTN users, with MMS enabled handsets, need to dial *123*2# which will give them the option to choose between Jamcam Images and the Tourist Cams.

Whilst all MTN customers can currently download any of these traffic or landmark images onto their cell phones free, they will be charged the rate of R2.00 per MMS if they choose to forward the image to another subscriber.

These images are also available on MTNICE on www.mtnice.co.za.
