This addition to its portfolio, on channel 250, gives viewers with a keen interest in the world in which they live greater access to detailed and factual-rich content through immersive documentaries and series.

Also from that date, Discovery Channel will be available in the general entertainment section of the DStv Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) number 121. The network's launch and channel move significantly strengthens its Europe, Middle East and Africa's (EMEA) South African portfolio, with its four distinct brands in this highly competitive market. In EMEA, 13 brands reach 219 million cumulative subscribers in 105 countries with programming customized in 24 languages.

In December 2009, the launch of its HD Showcase on the DStv HD platform in southern Africa, made it the first international broadcaster to offer an entirely HD channel in the region. Southern African viewers are now enjoying their favourite network's shows from across a vast portfolio of networks, exclusively in HD.

The portfolio of brands now includes Discovery Channel (general entertainment), Discovery World (leading factual zone) Discovery HD Showcase (tech savvy viewers) and Animal Planet (female audiences).
