Local show nominated for Rose D'Or

Stokvel, which returns for a fifth season on SABC 2 from 30 March 2008, has recently been nominated for a Rose D'Or international TV award in the best sitcom category. It is up against shows from Australia, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Poland and the UK, whose entrants include My Family.

The Rose d'Or Festival finals will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, 2 – 6 May 2008.

In 2004, Stokvel allegedly became the only South African television show thus far to ever make the finals of The International Emmy Awards. It was also a nominee for the Best Sitcom at the Rose D'Or Awards for international television entertainment excellence in the same year.

This comedy series is set in the vibrant and exciting world of stokvels, institutions which have been a part of African culture for decades. A place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money and is the dynamic backdrop for the continuing activities of two stokvels in Diepkloof, Soweto.

Since its first broadcast in 2003, Stokvel reports having scored extremely high ratings in its time slot and continues to attract a large audience to the ongoing adventures of the young professional couple, Mojo Khumalo (James Ngcobo) and his beautiful wife, Lerata (Manaka Ranaka), and their respective stokvels. Mojo is the chairman of the men's stokvel, Majakathata, and Lerata is the treasurer of the women's society, Sweet Harmony.

The series is created for SABC2 by Penguin Films, under the artistic direction of Roberta Durrant and Joe Mafela. The new episodes will again be directed by Vusi Dibakwane, director of the previous series.
